When should your child have their first dental visit? We recommend taking him or her within six months of the first tooth erupting, or by one year at the latest. Parents who want to bring their child in earlier are more than welcome to; we also encourage bringing your child on your dental visits.
During your visit with us, Dr. Chris Davis and his entire dental team can offer advice for the following:
- Feeding habits for your child
- Mouth cleaning
- Baby bottle tooth decay
- Unhealthy pacifier habits
- Finger sucking
Your Child's First Dental Visit
Your child's relationship to their oral health and dentistry starts young; it is a big responsibility! We are more than happy to help your child navigate their dental health, starting as young as 12 months.
The first dental visit typically lasts about 45 minutes. Depending on their age, we may do a full exam, including the jaws, gums, and surrounding tissue. Dr. Davis will do a visual inspection and determine if your child needs a light cleaning. Dental cleanings help get rid of plaque and polish the teeth. During the appointment, Dr. Davis may demonstrate proper brushing techniques and flossing.
We may use digital x-rays to get a good look at your teeth and determine if treatments are necessary.
During the Second Dental Visit
We recommend seeing the dentist every six months unless otherwise advised. Dental visits are great times to build up your child's self-esteem and security in the dental chair.
At-Home Dental Care
Keeping your child is simple and straightforward; here are a few tips:
- Before teeth erupt, clean gums with a clean washcloth
- Use a gentle, soft-bristled toothbrush
- Use small amounts of toothpaste
- Avoid giving your child milk or juice before bedtime
- Help your child brush their teeth until seven or eight
- Reduce sugar or treats
