Comfortable Root Canals in Lexington, KY

Root Canals | Garden Springs DentalNo one wants to hear the news that they need a root canal. The procedure has a terrible reputation because most people associate it with pain. In truth, it is one of the most effective methods for relieving certain types of tooth pain.

The team at Garden Springs Dental has performed hundreds of comfortable root canals for our patients. But we know that no matter how easy we say the procedure is, you may still experience some anxiety.

That’s okay! We understand, and we are here to support you by putting your needs first and focusing all our attention on you exclusively. You are like family to us, and you can be confident that we will treat you with the personalized care you require.

Do Root Canals Hurt?

This is one of the first questions our patients ask. But the idea that a root canal procedure automatically involves pain is an outdated myth.

There’s no doubt that infection or inflammation of the tooth's pulp and nerve can be excruciatingly painful. But you should remember that having a root canal eliminates this severe pain and is not the cause of the pain.

Everyone has different comfort levels, and we understand that you may need a little more help to relax. At Garden Springs Dental, we offer nitrous oxide, which is an excellent option for nervous patients. Nitrous oxide won’t put you to sleep, so you will still be able to interact with our team during your procedure. It will simply help you feel calm, relaxed, and a little drowsy. You will be aware of what’s happening, but the activity around you will fade into the background.

Why Do I Need a Root Canal?Garden Springs Dental | Root Canals

The outer layer of your tooth is composed of dental enamel, one of the hardest substances in the human body. Beneath dental enamel is a layer called dentin. Deep within the tooth, there is a chamber that holds dental pulp that provides the nutrition and blood flow to the tooth that keep it alive. The pulp also enables nerves to enter the tooth.

When decay affects the enamel, we can fill the tooth to restore it. However, if dental injury or decay damages the pulp, it can reach the nerve of the tooth and become very painful. When this occurs, it’s critical to remove the infected pulp and the nerves that run through the pulp to avoid losing the tooth.

What Happens during a Root Canal?

Your biggest concern probably isn’t about the procedure as much as it is your comfort. We give every patient who undergoes root canal treatment multiple applications of a local anesthetic. This process numbs the nerves in the tooth as well as the area around it. You can be confident that we won’t start your procedure until we know that your mouth is numb and you are completely comfortable.

At Garden Springs Dental, our doctors use state-of-the-art rotary endodontics to gently and efficiently clear the nerve roots from canals inside the tooth. The tooth is then disinfected, filled, and sealed. In most cases, we will recommend a dental crown to protect the tooth and restore its function.
